ASO for indie games: a practical checklist that actually works

App Store Optimization is the cheapest growth lever you have. A no-fluff checklist to help your game get found and installed on Google Play.

Most indie games are not held back by quality — they are held back by discoverability. App Store Optimization (ASO) is how players find you without you paying for every install. The good news: you can do 80% of it yourself in an afternoon.

Start with the listing fundamentals

  • Title: lead with your brand, then your main keyword. "Bubble Blast: Color Match Puzzle" beats a bare "Bubble Blast".
  • Short description: one sentence that sells the hook. This is your elevator pitch.
  • Long description: natural, readable, keyword-aware — never a keyword dump.

Win the first impression

The first two or three screenshots decide whether someone keeps scrolling. Show the most satisfying moment of your game, not a menu screen. Add short captions that describe the benefit, not the feature.

Players decide in seconds. If your first screenshot does not show the fun, you have already lost most of them.

Keywords without the guesswork

  1. List the words a player would type to find a game like yours.
  2. Check what similar games rank for.
  3. Work the strongest terms naturally into your title, short description, and long description.
  4. Re-check every few weeks — ASO is a loop, not a one-off.

The signals Google rewards

  • Install-to-open rate and retention — quality keeps you ranked.
  • Ratings and reviews — both volume and freshness matter.
  • Update cadence — regular updates signal an active, healthy app.

Quick wins you can do today

  • Localize your listing into 2–3 high-volume languages.
  • Add a 15–30 second preview video.
  • Refresh your icon and test whether a cleaner version lifts taps.
  • Reply to reviews — it nudges ratings and shows you care.
